Building Your Support System

When the people closest to you don’t understand your prep journey…

A common struggle competitors face during prep 👉🏼 close family & friends not being on board with their fitness goals (and sometimes even resenting them for trying to better themselves).

This one can be tough, because naturally, you expect the people closest to you to support you the most… but that isn’t always the case.

Most people will *never fully understand* the process of prep or why you’d willingly choose something so demanding just to step on stage. That lack of understanding can make an already difficult season even harder. When you’re on a mission, the people closest to you may unintentionally (or intentionally) create resistance.

Here are a few ways to navigate it and build a stronger support system:

1️⃣ Be VERY specific with your goals

If you aren’t clear on what you’re working toward and why, it’s hard for anyone else to be. Clearly explain what you’re trying to accomplish and why it matters to you. Clarity builds understanding — and often respect.

2️⃣ Have a heartfelt conversation

Change can make people uncomfortable. It can feel to them like you’re “leaving them behind” or judging their lifestyle. Making time to have an open & honest conversation about why you’re doing this can prevent underlying resentment building on the backend.
👉🏼 Let them know you still need their support to put them at ease and help you accomplish your goals — reassurance goes a long way.

3️⃣ Involve them in your journey

Even small involvement can create buy-in. Ask for their support. Invite them to do a challenge with you. Or simply model the discipline and habits you’re building. Over time, consistency speaks louder than explanations.

4️⃣ Find more supportive people to include in your circle

You become like the people you spend the most time with. If no one around you understands this lifestyle, go find those who do.
Whether in-person or online, having people who get it and can encourage you through the hard days makes a massive difference. (And — you’ll always make friends backstage if you’re open to it.)

5️⃣ Set boundaries without resentment

Not everyone needs to understand your goals to respect them. Protect your energy, stay consistent, and let your actions speak louder than explanations.

And if all else fails…
Use it as fuel. Prove them wrong — it always works 😉
